Popfools is on holiday! A lovely, tan-on-the-beach, swim-in-the-sea, and drink-lots-of-cocktails type holiday. So that you still get your Popfools fix over the next fortnight, and to convince ourselves that our holiday is hard-earned and well deserved, this feature will be rating some of the top holiday tunes, in plenty of time before the British summer hits. We have devised and strenuously-tested all new holiday-themed criteria for our best holiday songs to live up to, so hold onto your inflatable fly-fish, because this is going to be a whale of a ride!
Yes, you probably knew that this would be inevitably included in our holiday playlist. A cheeky cover of the Boney-M song, you may be horrified to recall that this genuinely reached #3 in the UK charts. Cheeky-mania was apparently an actual thing. Anyway, with minimal effort put into actually making this a good song, how will it fare against our brand spanking new holiday-themed popfoolish criteria?
References to beach/sea/sun/sand in lyrics?: A grand total of 10. Including ‘The sea and sun is hot and fun’ , ‘You stretch and feel the sand and sea’ , and talk about ‘the rhythm of the waves’. Rating: 10/10
Steel-drums present? Yes, from the intro and throughout the song. Very prominent in the chorus; are the main component of bridge leading up to middle 8. Rating: 10/10
Other dodgy ‘holiday’ sound effects?: Crickets chirping, castanets, the girls laughing lots. An alarming lack of sea sound effects. Rating: 8/10
Video evoke ‘holiday’? Yes, a large portion of the video includes the girls frolocking in their bikinis on the beach. Summer hats, a hotel room, beach balls, inflatables, swimming pool, drinking out of a hollowed pineapple and sunloungers all included… you get the idea. We could go on. We won’t. Rating: 10/10
Nonsensical lyrics, preferably holiday-themed? ‘Heidi-heidi-ho’ isn’t the Cheeky Girls dissing Britain’s favourite Sugababe, but rather a use of surely the ultimate nonsensical holiday themed chant that exists. They also utter old favourite ‘ole!’, call a holiday a ‘holi-holiday’, sing ‘ooh-ahh-ahh’ and do some ‘BRRRRRRURRUGH’-ing too. Rating: 15/10
Verdict: Is this an ultimate holiday song? With the use of cheap synths, the girls exaggerating their Eastern-European accents, and all of the above mentioned, this song must be the ultimate holiday song. If you were sat in a pop-production-factory, dreaming up the ‘perfect’ holiday song, there’s really not much more you could bring to the table than this song manages. It is literally jam-packed to the point of bursting with sun, sea, sand and holidayness. Score: 53/50
