Popfools is on holiday! A lovely, tan-on-the-beach, swim-in-the-sea, and drink-lots-of-cocktails type holiday. So that you still get your Popfools fix over the next fortnight, and to convince ourselves that our holiday is hard-earned and well deserved, this feature will be rating some of the top holiday tunes, in plenty of time before the British summer hits. We have devised and strenuously-tested all new holiday-themed criteria for our best holiday songs to live up to, so hold onto your inflatable fly-fish, because this is going to be a whale of a ride!
Danish pop superstars Alphabeat returned last year, after a totally awesome but under-appreciated house-inspired second album, on a much smaller scale – having been dropped by their label in the UK – and seemingly doing most of the work for the release themselves. Anyway, their new sound, personified by lead single Vacation, was late 80’s pop on steroids. The album took a long while for us to get into, but how will the single fare against our brand spanking new holiday-themed popfoolish criteria?
References to beach/sea/sun/sand in lyrics?: 4, although broaden the criteria to include the words ‘holiday’ or ‘vacation’ and a hugely astounding 19 is reached. Impressive. Rating: 13/10
Steel-drums present? Sadly only present in their absence. A keyboard/synth tries to make up for it by being categorically ‘boppy’, but we’re not at all sold. Rating: 4/10
Other dodgy ‘holiday’ sound effects?: There’s ‘whirring’ which, stretching your imagination a little (a lot) sounds like a plane taking off. THERE IS THE SOUND OF THE WAVES HITTING THE BEACH!!! At the very beginning and very end. In an ideal world, this would be included for longer and/or be layered throughout the song. Rating: 5/10
Video evoke ‘holiday’? Begins with airport-aesthetics and some pretty stewardesses. Anders SG shakes maracas. SOUND THE MARACAS ALARM!!! The air stewardesses keep coming back-later they push Steine on a luggage trolley. Sadly, the band is not on vacation but are merely performing with colourful graphics. The stewardesses do a nice bit of dancing and some big balloons get involved. The end shot is what the whole video should have been: set on a beach, with a pineapple. Rating: 7/10
Nonsensical lyrics, preferably holiday-themed? ‘Oh-oh’ is used extensively, which, whilst not the most original of nonsensical chants, and definitively not holiday-themed, is still scandalously enjoyable. To be fair, the ‘oh-oh’ does form the hook of the song. Rating: 8/10
Verdict: Is this an ultimate holiday song? It really really should be, especially given the song’s title and the playful nature of the band. However, it doesn’t live up to things we want from an ultimate holiday record. Too many times it falls short. It’s still one to include on your holiday-themed playlist, but sadly the criteria have seen this song fall short of the high standards set by the Cheeky Girls. Score: 37/50
