Popfools is on holiday! A lovely, tan-on-the-beach, swim-in-the-sea, and drink-lots-of-cocktails type holiday. So that you still get your Popfools fix over the next fortnight, and to convince ourselves that our holiday is hard-earned and well deserved, this feature will be rating some of the top holiday tunes, in plenty of time before the British summer hits. We have devised and strenuously-tested all new holiday-themed criteria for our best holiday songs to live up to, so hold onto your inflatable fly-fish, because this is going to be a whale of a ride!
We prefer the RedOne remix of this song, as it’s a bit faster and hence got a bit more going for it, therefore we will be writing about this version of the song. When the band that nobody wanted to reassemble got caught up in latter naughties reunion fever and released this summer tune of tunes, very few people were pleased, with the end result being a heady #34 position on the UK charts. We’ve always held the song quite dear to our hearts as a piece of trashy summer pop. But how will the song fare against our tough holiday-song criteria?
References to beach/sea/sun/sand in lyrics?: Yes, there are plenty We count 23, although we have allowed the song’s title ‘summertime’ to be included in that count. The ocean, the sea, the sun, and the sand are all also mentioned. 10/10
Steel-drums present? In the original version at 00:10 there is a drum-sound which could potentially be a steel drum, though probably isn’t. Rating: 4/10
Other dodgy ‘holiday’ sound effects?: The piano intro on the remix definitely sounds like the tinkle of the sea. The ‘cheers’ from the boys resemble cheering bros on the beach. The tinkle remains throughout the song, just as the tide remains a constant on the beach. Rating: 5/10
Video evoke ‘holiday’? The video is set on a beach. Yacht, drysuit, shirtlessness, towels, standing in the sand, lots of bikini-clad babes, bamboo shutters, fake CGI/green-screen sunset, palm trees. Dubious product placement combined with non-beach scenes at the start loses the boys a point. Rating: 9/10
Nonsensical lyrics, preferably holiday-themed? The remix starts with a satisfying ‘ahh’, there is a nice ‘oooh’ in the chorus, and as mentioned there are bro-cheers a plenty in both versions. At 2:20 for the breakdown there is a lot of ‘ooh’ing and ‘aah’ing. We like the parts where the band start listing articles of summer clothing that ‘she’ was presumably wearing; ‘your flip flops, half shirt, short shorts, mini skirt’ and later ‘in your strapless sundress’. The attention-to-detail here is almost a little freaky. Nonetheless, good effort. Rating: 8/10
Verdict: Is this an ultimate holiday song? It’s a song about meeting a girl in the summertime, it sounds ‘light’, references the beach lots and the video too is set on a beach. It scores 36/50, and hence ranks just under ‘Vacation’ in terms of appropriateness for the title of ultimate holiday anthem. What will tomorrow’s song bring to the table? Who knows…
