Popfools is on holiday! A lovely, tan-on-the-beach, swim-in-the-sea, and drink-lots-of-cocktails type holiday. So that you still get your Popfools fix over the next fortnight, and to convince ourselves that our holiday is hard-earned and well deserved, this feature will be rating some of the top holiday tunes, in plenty of time before the British summer hits. We have devised and strenuously-tested all new holiday-themed criteria for our best holiday songs to live up to, so hold onto your inflatable fly-fish, because this is going to be a whale of a ride!
A song that literally needs no introduction, so straight to the Popfoolish holiday criteria for the legendary Mysterious Girl.
References to beach/sea/sun/sand in lyrics?: Our count sadly gets stuck at 5, but due to the variety on offer – ‘shore, ‘tropical scent’, ‘watching the sun go down’ ‘the tide is drifting in’ and ‘warmth’ – we’re scoring the Andre highly. 7/10
Steel-drums present? Yes, from the introduction of the song. AMAZING. Rating: 12/10
Other dodgy ‘holiday’ sound effects? No, sadly these are lacking. The instruments used are all extremely holiday-ish but that does not mean that more sound effects aren’t required!! Rating: 2/10
Video evoke ‘holiday’? Yes. First shot is sunset; sea, boats, beach and fishermen are all thrown in within the first 2 seconds. People wearing colourful outfits, palm trees and most importantly The Andre’s 8 pack and THAT waterfall scene. The stuff holidays of dreams are made of. Rating: 15/10
Nonsensical lyrics, preferably holiday-themed? ‘Ooooh-oooooh-ohhh’ is an iconic use of nonsensical lyrics which we salute The Andre for. ‘Ooh’ is used too, in the pre-chorus. After the tide is drifting in comes a nice ‘ahhh-ahhh’ and the a ‘oooh’ is in the background too. Basically, there’s many ohs and ahs all throughout the song, helping the holiday mood along very nicely. The “rapper” is also very nonsensical with whatever he says. Rating: 10/10
Verdict: Is this an ultimate holiday song? Surely the combo of the steel drums and THAT video must make it a contender for the top spot? No, sadly the oversight of not including dodgy sound effects has seen the song score 46/50 but still, a very strong effort from The Andre which must be congratulated as he storms into second place on our ranked holiday playlist. Tomorrow we have a very special edition of the Popfools ultimate holiday playlist so make sure you tune in!
