“It’s Friday, Friday, gotta write ‘Song Of The Week’ on Friday” as a wise popfool known as Rebecca ‘Godbecca’ Black once sung. She was right about our writing habits; it IS Friday and it IS song of the week time.
This absolute bona fide classic, a UK #2 smash hit from April 1975, should need no introduction to sane Popfools the world over. There’s not a lot more that needs saying about such a classic. The sounds of the birds chirping and of course Minnie’s angelic voice are merely two of the many things that make this song s great; ‘no-one else can make me feel the colours that you bring’ is an absolutely genius line. And who can forget the ‘and every time that we – oooooh’ declaration? Is there anybody who doesn’t attempt (and fail) to sing along with the ‘OOOOOOOOOOOH’ in a ridiculously high pitched voice? Minnie Ripperton makes Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera jealous of her unique and astonishing talents. Meanwhile the execution of the ‘la la la la la, la la la la, la la la la, do be do be doo dooo’ must surely mean it grabs the spot of the ultimate nonsensical chant in popmusic history, much to the disdain of Lady GaGa’s ‘Bad Romance.’
