Ultimate Christmas Playlist

Following the success of our holiday playlist feature in summer comes our guide to the top Christmas tunes. As soon as December begins the same tired, old, and most alarmingly shit songs get pulled out every year. In order to combat this we bring you only the very best Christmas songs.

Hurts‘All I Want For Christmas Is New Year’s Day’ – Hurts

Although the mix of Hurts’ aesthetic and sonic choices often portrays them as gloomy miserable bastards, it is undeniable that they often have the substance to justify their styling, with this song being an example of Hurts on form. Although the song is mid-to-slow tempo, its underlining message seems to be one of hopeful optimism for the future, and that is a message that could come in handy around this particularly stressful time of year. We salute Hurts for having the courage to release a Christmas song that’s as much about New Year’s Day as it is Christmas, and we enjoy their effort, but most importantly is how it fares against our world famous Popfoolish criteria, so without any further ado…

References to snow/winter/fire/cold in lyrics? Explicitly there are only two, although implicitly the song has an extremely cold, winter feel to it. Therefore we are awarding 5 bonus points to Hurts. 7/10

Sleigh bells present? Of course they are! With a line of ‘all of the bells ringing out for Christmas’ it would have been most popfoolish of the Hurts boys not to include a sleigh bell or two.  10/10

Other dodgy Christmas sound effects? There are very many ‘bell’ sound effects throughout the song that Hurts are almost taking it to the next level. The instrumental sounds authentically and instantly Christmassy without being too much.  6/10

Christmas themed lyrics? Well the song is called ‘All I Want For Christmas Is New Year Day’, so as you might expect, a large portion of the lyrics refer to the new year. However, with many mentions of Christmas, including the song’s all important opening line, and the rather specific ‘It’s only seven days till Christmas.’ There are at least 15 ‘Christmas’ mentions during the song so Hurts score a sensational 15/10 in this category.

RATING:  Hurts are doing extremely well to score 38/40
