Following the success of our holiday playlist feature in summer comes our guide to the top Christmas tunes. As soon as December begins the same tired, old, and most alarmingly shit songs get pulled out every year. In order to combat this we bring you only the very best Christmas songs.
‘White Winter Hymnal’ – Fleet Foxes
The debut single from Fleet Foxes was a stripped-back, wintry, and magical affair. The layering of the vocals creates a beautiful soundscape in which to bury yourself as you consider hibernating for the winter in your warm warm duvet and having essential supplies brought in on a husky-driven sledge. Our only criticism of the song is that, at 2:29, the song is over before you have time to properly relish the sounds. Despite ITV using Birdy’s cover to advertise their Christmas programming this year, we are sticking with the original version. We know that you’re dying to see how it fares against our world famous popfoolish criteria, so without any further ado…
References to snow/winter/fire/cold in lyrics? We’re going for 4 references, although as the words are repeated this results in an impressive score of 8/10
Sleigh bells present? We can’t hear any. What a travesty, for all Christmas and winter songs must have sleigh bells present. It’s an unwritten poplaw in the popworld. 0/10
Other dodgy Christmas sound effects? Certainly nothing dodgy on this record, although the layering of the vocals give them a choirboy feel. Most festive indeed. 5/10
Christmas themed lyrics? The song is about winter rather than Christmas, and although we fiercely defend its position on the playlist, it sadly can only score a dreadful 0/10 in this category.
RATING: Fleet Foxes probably won’t lose any sleep at their mediocre score of 13/40, although they’ve still managed to avoid bottom place.
