As we said here, we’re not sure that we could listen to a whole full-length alum of Sophie Ellis Bextor’s new musical style, certainly not in one sitting. However lead single ‘Young Blood’ grew on us massively. Off the back of a hugely successful ‘Strictly Come … Album Buying’ campaign, ‘Wanderlust’ managed to not only become Sophie’s highest charting album since her debut effort back in 2001 (!) but also stayed in the UK top 10 for three weeks, no mean feat for what is an independent release.
Very much in the same musical vein as ‘Young Blood’, ‘Runaway Daydreamer’ is easy-going, tame and soft. Thus it won’t be every popfool’s cup of tea. Nonetheless, we personally adore the melodic chorus, particularly the ‘esca-eyy-ape’ moment; whilst the ‘run away run aw-ee-ay’ ‘ooo-oooooooh’ middle 8 is a splendid showcase of gentleness. Meanwhile, the visuals of the video are pitch perfect, evoking at once ‘Blossoming English Rose’ Sophie and ‘Dreaming of One Day Becoming a Tsaritsa’ Sophie.
VERDICT: Essentially it’s not one for a Friday afternoon, but it most certainly IS one to put on when your Nan comes round for a cuppa. 8/10 and that all-important popfools seal of approval.
